» 25 NOV: PICTURE FROM THE PAST - Artist Andy Warhol is pictured in 1964 looking at acetate used in creating his famous Marilyn paintings. Warhol became the leading light of the Pop scene in America with art based on the instantly recognisable – Campbell’s soup, Coke and Marilyn Monroe. Monroe’s death in 1962 inspired a series of images of her based on photographs Warhol saw in the newspapers. He was constantly drawn to the topic of celebrity, making multiple images of Monroe as well as Elvis Presley and Jackie Kennedy. Warhol used commercial screen-printing techniques and assistants to make his art. His methods were so industrial that he even called his studio the Factory. This photograph is one of many rarely seen images of the artist by American photographer William John Kennedy on show in London at the A&D Gallery until 20 December 2015.
