9 DEC: #WEDNESDAYWOMAN – CELEBRATING THE ACHIEVEMENT OF PIONEERING WOMEN French photojournalist Françoise Demulder, of Gamma agency, became the first woman to win the prestigious World Press Photo of the Year in 1976, with a black and white picture of a Palestinian woman pleading with a gunman in Beirut. Demulder made her name covering the Vietnam War, staying in Saigon after many foreigners had been evacuated. Her work appeared internationally in such publications as Paris Match, Newsweek and Stern. Returning to Paris after a trip to Thailand and before receiving her prize in Amsterdam, Demulder was photographed on the Champs Elysees in 1977.
