4 DEC: Mount Etna, the volcano on the Italian island of Sicily, has erupted in spectacular fashion sending a plume of fire and ash into the sky, several kilometres high. Sicilian photographer Marco Restivo used photo editing software to overlap five images to create one single picture of the volcano lighting under a cloud of dense smoke, as it erupted for the first time in two years. The eruption caused the closure of the nearest airport on the Italian mainland and left several villages covered in a thick layer of ash.
