10 DEC: #ChristmasStories from the Middle East - Yolande Knell, BBC Middle East Correspondent - “These cheerful, golden Christmas lights are displayed along the length of Star Street in the Old City of Bethlehem. This narrow road leading to Manger Square is part of the traditional pilgrimage route to the Nativity Church, recognised as part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is believed to be the way that Joseph and Mary entered the city before Jesus was born. Nowadays the depressed economic situation in Bethlehem means many shops along this road remain closed.” Photo: Yolande Knell /BBC #ChristmasStories #BBCMiddleEast @BBCNews by bbcnews 10 DEC: #ChristmasStories from the Middle East - Yolande Knell, BBC Middle East Correspondent - “These cheerful, golden Christmas lights are displayed along the length of Star Street in the Old City of Bethlehem. Surfing began somewhere in the distant past of Polynesian culture and by the mid eighteenth century, Captain James Cook sailed to Hawaii and saw locals climbing onto wooden boards and speeding along the waves. 7 DEC: #ChristmasStories from the Middle East - Yolande Knell, BBC Middle East Correspondent - "Our BBC cameraman found these decorations in a hunting store in Zamalek, a well-off area of Cairo. Other nearby shops sell tinsel and Christmas trees. It is believed that about 10 per cent of Egypt¹s population are Christians, mostly Copts who celebrate Christmas Day on 7 January, a national holiday. Gun sales rose during the social upheaval that followed the 2011 uprising which culminated in the overthrow of the long-time president, Hosni Mubarak." 7 DEC: Dave Greszczzyszyn of Canada competes in his first run of the men's skeleton competition during the BMW IBSF Bob Skeleton World Cup at Veltins Eis-Arena in Winterberg, Germany. The skeleton is all about a big push at the start and tactical steering after that as the slider is taken on a bone-jangling journey down the icy course. Once on the course, the athlete steers the skeleton by gently transferring weight to the left or right. It is important to take as direct a line as possible, avoid contact with the walls and reduce wind resistance by keeping elbows in and shoulders in contact with the sled. After the finish, the feet are dragged along the ice to bring the skeleton to a standstill. 4 DEC: Mount Etna, the volcano on the Italian island of Sicily, has erupted in spectacular fashion sending a plume of fire and ash into the sky, several kilometres high. Sicilian photographer Marco Restivo used photo editing software to overlap five images to create one single picture of the volcano lighting under a cloud of dense smoke, as it erupted for the first time in two years. The eruption caused the closure of the nearest airport on the Italian mainland and left several villages covered in a thick layer of ash. 4 DEC: #ChristmasStories from the Middle East - Yolande Knell, BBC Middle East Correspondent - "On 4 December many Middle Eastern Christians mark St Barbara's Day. A miracle is said to have taken place as the early saint was running from persecution: she ran through freshly planted wheat fields which grew instantly to disguise her path. This is remembered with traditional dishes made with boiled wheat and seasonal fruits and nuts such as pomegranate, raisins and chestnuts. Seeds are often planted on this day and the shoots used to decorate the nativity scene for Christmas. In the Orthodox Church, the feast is marked on 17 December." 4 DEC: One of the UK's rarest mammals, the grey long-eared bat, is one of 100 of England’s most threatened species which are being thrown a lifeline with a £4.6 million grant for conservation work. Although the UK's grey long-eared bats have always been confined to the relatively warm south of England, they have been squeezed into just a few fragmented colonies. The Heritage Lottery Fund money will go towards the "back from the brink" project, which will see a range of organisations working to save key species including the sand lizard and the Duke of Burgundy butterfly from extinction.
